In 2010 FBC Briar (Azle, TX) voted unanimously to send the Speeds to Syracuse, NY to plant a church on the South Side of the city. In September 2011 the Speeds moved to Syracuse and began meeting in a living room with a couple of men Jon discipled at the time. Jon and these men began evangelizing widely throughout the city including bus stops, festivals, sporting events, Syracuse University, the regional market … almost anywhere people gathered.
In November, Jon began a Bible study at Valley Vista apartments and in January a second study began at The Bernadine Apartments. Small conferences featuring Mack Tomlinson (prayer), Randall Easter (the local church), Mike Gendron (evangelizing Roman Catholics) and Tony Miano (street evangelism) were held. In the process the church plant grew to about 20 regular attendees. The church plant began renting space at a local Presbyterian “church” but ended up having to go back to a living room for about a year. Our worship service had singing, Scripture reading, prayer and was centered around the preaching of the Word.
In September 2014, Christ is King Baptist voted unanimously to rent a storefront. In order to afford the rent, the church agreed to allow Jon to sell used and rare books. The store is designed to seat up to 50 people comfortably. The store also provided us a venue to meet people and evangelize since people came from all over the region to browse our selection of 22,000+ used and rare books in fields such as theology, literature, signed books, antique books, first editions, Americana, art, and more.
In 2019 the Lord called Jon back to Texas to co-elder with Randal Easter at FBC Briar. In September of 2019 Christ is King voted unanimously to call Jamie Terry as our next pastor. Later that year Jamie and his family moved from Tennessee to Syracuse, NY for him to begin his pastorate at Christ is King. By God’s grace we are continuing on as a local church and seeking to impact our community and the world for the glory of God.
